Calw rocks is a nationally known, usually one-day classic rock festival that takes place annually in the summer months on the market square of Calw . The program consists of national and international bands and performers from the sixties, seventies and eighties. Calw rocks is a pure standing concert. The marketplace has a capacity of approx. 5000 people.

History of origin

Calw rocks emerged from the Hermann Hesse Festival 2002, with which the city celebrated the 125th birthday of the Calw-born poet and Nobel Prize winner for literature, Hermann Hesse . One of the highlights of the extensive anniversary program was the appearance of the American rock band "Steppenwolf" ( Born to be Wild ), based on the Hesse novel Der Steppenwolf named. The concert under the motto “Steppenwolf meets Steppenwolf” in front of around 4,000 people received a lot of media attention, among other things, the “Tagesthemen” broadcast a longer report on the same evening. The success caused the city to hold a concert with the British band "Status Quo" at the same location the following year. The city then withdrew and left the marketplace concerts to the Calw concert agency concetera GmbH, which has been continuing the series since 2004 under the title “Calw rocks”. The two concetera managing directors Jürgen Ott and Reinhard Stöhr are responsible for planning the program. The broadcasting station SWR1 and the regional newspaper Schwarzwälder Bote have been there as media partners since the beginning . In 2015 "Calw rocks" was protected as a trademark across Europe.

Calw rocks and Udo Lindenberg

The first Calw concert with the self-confessed Hermann Hesse fan Udo Lindenberg took place in 2005 as part of Calw rocks. A year later, Lindenberg founded the Udo Lindenberg Foundation in the Hesse town of Calw , which, among other things, is committed to promoting young talent in the rock-pop field. The Hermann Hesse Festival has been held every two years since 2008 and consists of the final round of the “ PanikPreis ” competition for young talents and a full Udo Lindenberg concert. In 2008, 2012 and 2014 the Hermann Hesse Festival was docked at Calw rockt and carried out by concetera GmbH on behalf of the Udo Lindenberg Foundation. Udo Lindenberg's Calw concert in 2012 was the occasion for Matthias Matussek to write the Spiegel cover story I do my thing .
