The Udo Lindenberg Foundation - spelling: Udo Lindenberg Foundation, abbreviation: ULS - supports national and international cultural-political activities as well as humanitarian and social projects in Africa and Germany . The founder is the German rock musician Udo Lindenberg .

The Foundation

On December 10, 2006, Udo Lindenberg established a cultural and political foundation in Calw , the birthplace of Hermann Hesse . The foundation wants to combine the poet's life and work with modern music. She promotes young copywriters and musicians through competitions in order to “look for new ways against marching along in the crowd, to write provocatively and not to adapt to the superstar junk” , says Lindenberg. According to its own statement, the ULS wants to "support national and international cultural-political activities and stand by the weaker people in the world through humanitarian and social projects".

activities

The main focus of ULS activities are the Hermann Hesse Festival and the Panic Prize competition, which take place regularly. There are also social and humanitarian projects in Africa.

In 2008 ULS participated in the construction of the school and training center Happy Watoto Home & Schools for 300 learners in Tanzania , initiated by the Good Hope association from Bielefeld. From 2010, the ULS supported the Hope Cape Town Foundation in South Africa in the fight against AIDS for two years and financed the training of five health workers in Cape Town .

The next focus of the ULS was Kenya , where the foundation is still active today (2019). In Bombolulu, a district of Mombasa where mostly poor people live, the ULS and the Water is Right foundation are committed to counteracting water shortages with decentralized projects , making better use of resources and making water affordable for everyone. In 2014, for example, a waterbox was built to treat the water extracted from a borehole to make drinking water. The Udo Lindenberg Foundation also pays the three best students in a school with 1,300 students to attend a secondary school.

In Kenya, the ULS supports the Watoto wa Kenya training and school center , St. Joseph House of Hope near Mtwapa with a day-care center, kindergarten, pre- and elementary school, secondary school as well as several training centers and the New White House Academy in Voi , where students and teachers like living together in a family. Up until the beginning of 2018, the foundation supported five young trainees from Kenya on their career path to become auto mechanics with the help of Porsche : two boys each at the Porsche centers in Dubai and Bahrain , and one young person at the Porsche dealer in Nairobi . All five obtained the bronze certificate for the completed vocational training and were taken over by their training company.

With the project Hinterm Horizont macht Schule , the Udo Lindenberg Foundation was involved in social education in Leipzig at two secondary schools in 2012 and 2013 as well as 2015 in Greifswald and 2017 in Quedlinburg.

Panic price

The band competition “Panikpreis” is a songwriting competition and music award that has been advertised and held every two years by the foundation . It was awarded every two years from 2008 to 2016. From 2019, the prize is to be awarded every three years. It is about original German lyrics, about Hesse's poetry and Lindenberg's panic poetry . The foundation also organizes the Hermann Hesse Festival , where the panic award winning band, Lindenberg with the panic band and other artists make music in honor of the poet.

The award and festival will be organized every three years from 2019. For the application, three completely or predominantly German-language songs must be sent to the foundation, which are "based on the works of Lindenberg and Hesse, who both always went their own way beyond all conventions", according to the ULS website: "There are no musical restrictions, all styles are allowed."

organization

The management lies with the Sparkasse Pforzheim Calw and is responsible for Katrin Zauner.

Since 2009 Arno Köster has been responsible for public relations and fundraising at the Udo Lindenberg Foundation and organizes the panic price competitions. Lindenberg's partner Tine Acke is also committed to the foundation .

The ULS Board of Trustees includes Udo Lindenberg ( founder and first chairman), Stephan Scholl (deputy chairman), Prof. Dr. Udo Dahmen , Erwin Geisler, Dieter Haag, André Klotzsche, Arno Köster, Inge Lindenberg, Rüdiger Ludwig, Hans Neuweiler and Herbert Schnierle-Lutz (as of January 2019). Jürgen Teufel is an honorary member of the Board of Trustees - Udo Lindenberg realized the idea of establishing his foundation with the then Chairman of the Board of Management of Sparkasse Pforzheim Calw in 2005 and 2006.

Varia

  • According to Udo Lindenberg's memory in 2005, Sparkasse director Jürgen Teufel considered a minimum amount of 500,000 euros to be appropriate for establishing a foundation. At that time, Teufel offered Lindenberg to raise this sum from his Sparkasse, if Udo Lindenberg were willing in return to transfer half of his GEMA rights (i.e. half of Udo's annual GEMA income as a composer and songwriter ) to his Sparkasse for 95 years . It remains to be seen in the book whether Lindenberg accepted Teufel's offer when the contract was signed in 2006 - or thankfully refused.
