Anssi Karttunen

Anssi Karttunen (* 1960 ) is a Finnish cellist .

Karttunen's teachers include Erkki Rautio , William Pleeth , Jacqueline du Pré and Tibor de Machula .

He premiered more than 150 works, including several cello concertos, a. a. by Magnus Lindberg , Kaija Saariaho , Rolf Wallin , Luca Francesconi and Tan Dun . From 1999 to 2005 he was principal cellist with the London Sinfonietta . Karttunen is with Ernst Kovacic (violin) and Steven Dann (viola) member of the string trio Zebra . In recitals he performed a. a. with Magnus Lindberg, Nicolas Hodges , Jennifer Koh and John Paul Jones . Concerts took him through Europe.

Numerous CDs document his work a. a. with the London Sinfonietta, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra . In 2013, his recording of Dutilleux 's Cello Concerto received the Gramophone Classical Music Awards .

Karttunen was the artistic director of the Avanti! -Chamber Orchestra from 1994 to 1998 . In 1995 he was artistic director of the Helsinki Biennale and from 1994 to 1997 of the Suvisoitto Festival in Porvoo. He was also artistic director of the Musica Nova Helsinki festival in 2015.

He has also appeared as a conductor a. a. with the Royal Flanders Philharmonic Orchestra, the cello ensemble of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra , the Gaida Ensemble in Vilnius and the NJO String Orchestra.

He plays a cello made by Francesco Ruggeri (around 1670).
