Plains Art Museum

The Plains Art Museum is an art museum in Fargo . It was founded in 1965 as the Red River Art Center and was given its current name ten years later. The museum's collection includes 3,000 works. These represent American and local contemporary art as well as Native American art. The museum building is the former International Harvestor warehouse, which dates from the end of the 19th century. The Plains Art Museum is one of around 750 museums accredited by the American Association of Museums.

history

In 1965 , the Red River Art Center was founded in Moorhead , Minnesota , the neighboring city of Fargos with which the city forms a contiguous urban area. The old post office was used as a museum building . After ten years, in 1975, the Red River Arts Center was merged with the Rourke Art Gallery, and was named Plains Art Museum. After the founding director James O'Rourke left the museum in 1987, the Plains Art Museum was separated from the Rourke Art Gallery and both institutions became independent again. The museum building in downtown Moorhead was closed in 1996, and then reopened in October 1997 in a renovated late 19th century department store in Fargo.

The International Harvestor department store was built in the late 19th century. Before the Plains Art Museum opened there in 1997, it was renovated according to plans by the architects Hammel, Green and Abrahamson . The building covers an area of ​​56,000 square meters. It not only offers exhibition space, but is also home to Hannaher's Print Studio, Dawson Studio, Café Muse, the museum shop, and the Goldberg Resource Library. The Plains Art Museum also has a two and a half story high projection screen and event rooms.

collection

The collection includes 3,000 works of art with a focus on modern and contemporary art . The museum owns works by Star Wallowing Bull , David P. Bradley , William Wegman and Walter Piehl . There are also works by Mary Cassatt , Andy Warhol , Salvador Dalí , George Morrison and James Rosenquist . Another part of the collection of the Plains Art Museum is works of Native American art .
