Iunius Bassus Theotecnius ( Latin Iunius Bassus signo Theotecnius ; * probably June / July 317 ; † August 25, 359 ) was city ​​prefect of Rome .

Life

According to the inscription on his sarcophagus , Junius Bassus died during his tenure as Roman praefectus urbi (city prefect) at the age of 42 years and 2 months. He was a Christian and is referred to as NEOFITVS , i.e. the newly baptized. The baptism so he got such. B. also Emperor Constantine the Great only on his deathbed.

The stone coffin was found in 1559 in the Confessio of the old St. Peter's Church in Rome, it is exhibited in the treasury of St. Peter's Basilica. It is an extremely high quality two-zone columnar sarcophagus with Christian scenes. The top row shows (from left to right): Abraham's sacrifice - Prisoner leadership of Peter - Enthroned Christ - Capture of Christ - Pontius Pilate. Bottom row (from left to right): Job - Adam and Eve - Christ's entry into Jerusalem - Daniel in the lions' den - Paul leading to the execution.

On the narrow side, erotes are shown reading and pressing grapes (top and bottom left) as well as harvesting grain and depicting the seasons (top and bottom right).
