After graduating from the cantonal grammar school in St. Gallen , he studied piano and composition with Walter Braunfels in Munich and with Eduard Erdmann in Cologne and then worked himself at the Cologne University of Music . Baumgartner also made various recordings for German radio stations, such as the concert piece for piano and orchestra by his teacher Eduard Erdmann at NDR Hanover under the direction of Willy Steiner.

Paul Baumgartner was portrayed in a life-size portrait by the artist friend Urban Zacharias Wick. This portrait is in the collection of the Rheintal Art Museum.
