Michael Beck (jazz musician)

Michael Beck (* 1968 ) is a Swiss jazz pianist .

Beck - his grandfather was the Swiss composer Conrad Beck - grew up in Bern and received classical piano training as a child. He studied physics, mathematics and musicology at the University of Bern and then switched to the Swiss Jazz School , where he was a student of Joe Haider . In 1992 he won a scholarship from the Berklee College of Music at Umbria Jazz .

From 1994 to 1997 he studied jazz piano and composition and film music at Berklee College in Boston. From 1997 to 1998 he lived in New York, where he was a student of Charlie Banacos and attended a BMI Jazz Composition workshop for big band composition. He stepped here u. a. Jochen Rückert , Bob Mover , Alec Dankworth and Jon Ellis and the hip-hop group Funk Monk .

Beck has been living in Bern again since 1999. Here he leads his own trio with Bänz Oester and Samuel Rohrer , with whom he has recorded two albums: Michael Beck Trio (2000) and Another Day (with Thomas Dürst and Rohrer). He also played as a sideman in numerous groups and has realized many electronic projects and stage music. His current project in 2015 is the Trio Aphorism with the Spanish vibraphonist Jorge Rossy and the saxophonist and bass clarinetist Domenic Landolf .

He teaches piano and theory at the Jazzcampus Basel.
