Marc Lewon (* 1972 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German musician and musicologist .

education

Marc Lewon was an exchange student at Climax High School in Climax, Minnesota in 1990. From 1995 to 2002 he studied musicology with Thomas Schipperges and Silke Leopold and German studies at the University of Heidelberg and from 2002 to 2007 lute with Crawford Young , Fidel with Randall Cook and singing at the medieval department of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis .

He is a specialist in German-language music of the Middle Ages , including minnesang ( Neidhart , Oswald von Wolkenstein ), song poetry and the early German songbooks ( Lochamer songbook , Glogauer songbook ), as well as instrumental music of the late Middle Ages. In 2018 he received the Doctor of Philosophy in Music from Oxford University under Reinhard Strohm .

Musician

Marc Lewon works as a lutenist and fiddle player in various ensembles for music from the Middle Ages and Renaissance music . He pursues a worldwide concert activity, participated in over 50 CD productions and radio recordings. He performed solo and ensemble playing with the ensembles Unicorn (Michael Posch), Perlaro , Peregrina , Dragma , Shield of Harmony (Crawford Young and Andreas Scholl ), Le Miroir de Musique (Baptiste Romain), Dulce Melos , a chantar and Grand Desir . He founded his own ensemble Leones in 2008 for special projects on early music .

Teaching

Marc Lewon taught “Medieval Music” theory and ensemble at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (2015), at the Leipzig Music Academy (2007–2008), at the Musicological Institutes of the Universities of Vienna (2013) and Heidelberg (2015), at the stages for early music at Fürsteneck Castle . He is the founder and, together with Uri Smilansky, director of the two-year extra-occupational training series for musicians and music educators on the music of the Middle Ages, Early Music of the High Classes and the Resonances of the Music of the Middle Ages at the Academy Burg Fürsteneck. In September 2017 he succeeded Crawford Young as "Professor of Medieval and Early Modern Lute Instruments" at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.
