Crawford Young (* 1952 ) is an American lutenist and musicologist based in Basel .

He is the director of the Ferrara Ensemble as well as the ensembles Project Ars Nova (PAN) and Shield of Harmony and was a long-time companion of Andreas Scholl .

Robert Crawford Young graduated from the New England Conservatory in Boston in 1976 with a degree in classical guitar, lute and tenor banjo. At Stanford University he came into contact with Thomas Binkley (1932–1995) in 1977 and was lutenist with the Sequentia ensemble from 1978–1981 , directed by Benjamin Bagby and Barbara Thornton (1950–1998). From 1982 to 2018 Young taught lute and performance practice at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis . In 2018 he received his doctorate in musicology from the University of Leiden under Dinko Fabris.

In 1982, Young founded the PAN (Project Ars Nova) ensemble with Laurie Monahan (mezzo-soprano), Michael Collver (countertenor and Stiller Zink). On the occasion of their American debut in 1984, Shira Kammen ( vielle ) and John Fleagle (tenor and medieval harp) joined the ensemble. After the death of John Fleagle from cancer, the group withdrew from concert life in 1999.

Almost at the same time as the PAN ensemble, the Ferrara Ensemble was founded in Basel in 1983. The ensemble included students from the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and remained flexible in its cast. The members included: Randall Cook (viola d'arco, vielle), Lena Susanne Norin (alto), Kathleen Dineen (soprano), Debra Gomez (harp), Stephen Grant (baritone), Norihisa Sugawara (lute), Marion Fourquier (harp), Miriam Andersén (mezzo-soprano, harp), Masako Art (harp), Raitis Grigalis (baritone), Els Janssens-Vanmunster (mezzo-soprano), Eve Kopli (soprano), Jessica Marshall (viola d'arco), Eric Mentzel (Tenor), Karl-Heinz Schickhaus (Dulcemelos).

In 2012 Young founded the Ensemble Shield of Harmony on the occasion of a recording and concert project on Oswald von Wolkenstein with Andreas Scholl. The line-up changes depending on the project and included the following musicians: Kathleen Dineen (soprano), Marc Lewon (lute, vielle), Margit Übellacker (dulcemelos), Miriam Andersén (mezzo-soprano, harp), Patrizia Bovi (soprano) and Mauro Borgioni (Baritone).

Young is one of the leading interpreters of the lute repertoire of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
