Paolo Pandolfo

Paolo Pandolfo (* 1959) is an Italian gambist who has turned to historical performance practice since around 1980 .

Since Pandolfo originally wanted to be a jazz musician, he first studied double bass and guitar at the Conservatory in Rome. Only after completing his studies and concert tours with the European Community Youth Orchestra did he turn to the viol in the mid-1970s. In 1979 he founded the baroque music ensemble "La Stravaganza" with the violinist Enrico Gatti and the harpsichordist Rinaldo Alessandrini . In 1981 he moved to Switzerland to deepen his studies at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis with Jordi Savall . Between 1982 and 1990 he was a member of Savall's Ensemble Hespèrion XX .

Pandolfo has been professor of viol at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis since 1989 , a position that August Wenzinger and Jordi Savall held before him . Since 1981 he has given numerous concerts and makes regular recordings with the "Ensemble Labyrinto" he founded in 1992
