The La Cetra Baroque Orchestra Basel is a company founded in 1999 by Swiss orchestra of historical performance practice with location Basel . The orchestra's field of activity extends from the music of the 17th to that of the 19th century.

history

The orchestra was founded on the initiative of the then director of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, Peter Reidemeister , when the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis wanted to create an orchestra for its graduates. To this day there is a connection with the research department of this institution for early music . The name of the orchestra was borrowed from Antonio Vivaldi , who, like other composers, titled his violin concertos op. 9 La Cetra , published in Amsterdam in 1727 - the lyre (zither), the instrument of Orpheus and Apollo.

Since then, an ascent into the ranks of the leading international early music orchestras has succeeded. Cooperations with the Theater Basel include opera productions such as Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea 2003 and L'Orfeo 2008, Vivaldi's Orlando furioso 2009, Cavallis La Calisto 2010, Handel's Ariodante 2012, Mozart's Idomeneo 2013, Purcell's The Indian Queen 2014 and Charpentiers Médée 2015. With At Ballett Basel, Purcell's The Fairy-Queen was realized in 2012 and Vivaldis Juditha triumphans in 2015 . La Cetra also works in concerts with singers such as Magdalena Kožená , Carlos Mena , Patricia Petibon , Nuria Rial and Andreas Scholl as well as instrumentalists such as Nicola Benedetti , Giuliano Carmignola and Maurice Steger . They also worked with guest conductors such as Gustav Leonhardt , Jordi Savall , Maurice Steger and René Jacobs .

La Cetra plays regularly in Germany ( Festspielhaus Baden-Baden ), Luxembourg ( Philharmonie de Luxembourg ), England ( Wigmore Hall London), Netherlands ( Concertgebouw Amsterdam) and Spain (Auditorio National de Madrid, Palau de la Musica Barcelona).

Artistic Director

The orchestra has been under the artistic direction of Andrea Marcon since 2009 . He is a conductor, harpsichordist and organist, an expert in early music and also works as a guest conductor with orchestras such as the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra , Concerto Cologne , the Berlin Philharmonic , the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra , the Gustav Mahler Chamber Orchestra and other orchestras. It is also thanks to Andrea Marcons initiative that «La Cetra Barockorchester Basel» has been supporting the «La Cetra Vocal Ensemble» since 2012.
