history

From 1956 acoustic events were held at the conservatory by the sound engineer Max Adam. David Johnson was responsible for the electronics division until 1984. Thomas Kessler then built up the electronic studio in its current form in 1987 . Hanspeter Kyburz was his successor. Erik Oña has been its director since 2003. During this time, a collaboration with Ensemble Phoenix Basel and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences was established. Fred van der Kooij and Heinz Holliger worked on projects there.

The Max / MSP software extends the institute's room for maneuver. A currently important field of research is "communication between man and machine". Research deals with Infrared Multi Action Tracker (IRMAT) and Interface for Fonts and Musicnotation (IFAM). The focus is on new music . A previous work focused on the development of spatialization algorithms for Birmingham ElectroAcoustic Sound Theater (BEAST) in collaboration with the University of Birmingham . CDs by Carola Bauckholt (with the WDR), Conlon Nancarrow (with the Paul Sacher Foundation and the WDR ) and Edgard Varèse (with the Paul Sacher Foundation, the Basler Orchester Foundation and the Tinguely Museum ) have also been recorded.

The electronic studio organizes the international "dBâle electronic music festival" every year. In: Bruno Spoerri (ed.): Music from nowhere. The history of electroacoustic music in Switzerland . Chronos, Zurich 2010, ISBN 978-3-03-401038-2 , pp. 107–123.
