San Giovanni in Sugana is a late Romanesque church in the municipality of San Casciano in Val di Pesa . The pieve is dedicated to John the Baptist .

location

The church is located approx. 5 km northwest of San Casciano in Val di Pesa, 1 km before the district of Cerbaia in Val di Pesa not far from Via Empolese (Strada Provinciale SP 12), which leads from San Casciano to Empoli . 1 km east of the Torrente Sugana flows into the Pesa .

history

Documents prove a previous building in 1019, the current, single-nave church shows the characteristic features of the 12th and 13th centuries in terms of architecture and architectural decoration. The simple facade was originally a portico in front of it.

Inside the church was a valuable sculpture by the master of Cabestany , an artist of the late 12th century whose name was unknown and whose work can be found mainly in Roussillon and Catalonia , but also in Tuscany , was among various other works of art . The candlestick is now in the Museum of San Casciano . Also from San Giovanni in Sugana and today in the Museo d'Arte Sacra di San Casciano Val di Pesa are the works Incoronazione della Vergine (panel painting by Neri di Bicci , 184 cm × 183 cm, created around 1476/1481) and Sant 'Antonio Abate, San Sebastiano e San Rocco con due Angeli by the master of Tavarnelle (panel painting, 117 cm × 148 cm, created around 1510/1515).
