Mercatale in Val di Pesa is an Italian village located in the municipality of San Casciano in Val di Pesa, in the metropolitan city of Florence .

geography

Mercatale (formerly also called Mercatale dei Campoli or Mercatale di Campoli ) is located about 20 km south of Florence and 5 km southeast of San Casciano in Val di Pesa. It is the most important and most populous district of the municipality, in which in 2001 a little more than 2000 residents lived. The place is 293  meters above sea level between the Pesa Valley and the Greve Valley in the Chianti Fiorentino area on the way from San Casciano in Val di Pesa to Greve in Chianti .

history

The origin of the village is linked to the late medieval development of some places (mostly castles) that were located near roads where the rural population's trade took place. Here Mercatale served as a market and trading center. This origin is confirmed not only by the name of the village ("Mercatale" comes from the Italian word mercato - market), but also by the trapezoidal shape of the main square, which in the past was very suitable for markets. A similar structure can also be seen in the neighboring village of Greve in Chianti, which arose from the “ Montefioralle ” market (then Monte Ficalle or Mercatale di Greve).

The village was born on the initiative of the manager of the Montecampolese Castle (formerly known as Monte Falco), who had a public square built in what was known as the Beccamorto (gravedigger). The castle Montecampo reading was already in 1379 as ghibellinisches out lock. Mercatale is also often mentioned in the chronicle written by Donato Velluti between 1367 and 1370 . In the following centuries, the increase in population caused the permanent abandonment of the original hilly town of Montecampolese.

In 1594 the chapel Oratorio della Compagnia del Sacramento , today's Chiesa di Santa Maria , was built on the market square. It became a parish church in 1786 and was last restored in 1964. On the left side of the church is the Villa Nunzi, which the Strozzi family had built. It consists of a trapezoidal structure with two symmetrical turrets. In the 1980s, Mercatale was nicknamed Piccola Russia ("Little Russia") because almost the entire population of the Communist Party of Italy (PCI) joined.

The 18th century adventurer Giuliano Dami , who was a lover of the Grand Duke Gian Gastone de 'Medici, was born in Mercatale . The village is also known because Pietro Pacciani (see main article Monster of Florence ) lived there, who was charged with killing several people.
