history

Circular route through Montefioralle

The Castello di Montefioralle, formerly also called Monteficalle , Monteficalli or Montefioralli , was first mentioned in 1085 in a document from the Badia a Passignano in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa , making it one of the oldest villages in the Chianti area . The fortress was central to the region in the Middle Ages and was appointed the seat of the Lega di Greve in 1250 . The castello consisted of two octagonal wall rings into which four gates were set, which are still present in a different form today. In 1260 the once militarily important fortress was largely destroyed in the battle of Montaperti . The numerous towers were removed in order to build houses with this building material between the two walls. The fortress was owned by the Buondelmonti family until it was conquered by Castruccio Castracani in 1325 and by Alberico da Barbiano in 1387 . After that it belonged to the families of the Ricasoli , the Benci di Figline and the Gherardini, among others . The Vespucci family had their origins in the village. Montefioralle received its current romantic appearance in the 14th century. Inside the formerly octagonal fortress there is only one lane that leads around the Romanesque Chiesa Santo Stefano as a circular path .

  • Chiesa di Santo Stefano , a church belonging to the diocese of Fiesole in the town center. Inside the church there are numerous works of art, including one from the 13th century (1270s) attributed to the Master of Bagnano or the Maestro di Greve (also known as Maestro di Montefioralle or Meliore di Jacopo ). The painting shows the Virgin Mary together with the baby Jesus and two angels ( Madonna col Bambino in trono e due angeli ). The canvas painting Santi Michele Arcangelo, Jacopo, Stefano e Domenico (1647) by Orazio Fidani (1606–1656) can be found in the church.
  • Pieve di San Cresci , Pieve in the diocese of Fiesole, which is about 1 km northwest of Montefioralle.

particularities

  • Montefioralle is said to have been the birthplace of the world-famous Amerigo Vespucci . However, this thesis can hardly be maintained today. What is certain is that the noble Vespucci family resided here in the Middle Ages. The Vespucci family coat of arms can still be seen on one of the houses.
