Donato Velluti (born July 6, 1313 in Florence ; † 1370 ibid) was a Florentine politician and chronicler.

Life

Velluti was born in 1313 to one of the most influential noble families in Florence. The family originally came from Semifonte (near Poggibonsi ) and had achieved some prosperity in the second half of the 13th century through lucrative trade with branches in Paris and London, among others . After studying law in Bologna from 1329 to 1338 , Velluti returned to Florence and held various public offices before he was appointed Gonfaloniere di Giustizia , head of state of the Republic of Florence and commander-in-chief of the army, in 1351 . He held this post until his death in 1370.

From 1367 until his death, Velluti wrote La Cronica domestica , in which he describes the history of his family in three volumes.
