San Mamiliano in Valli
San Mamiliano in Valli is a church in Siena dedicated to Saint Mamilianus. It belongs to the Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino and has the status of a parochial church .
location
The church is located outside the city walls of Siena on the street Via Enea Silvio Piccolomini named after Pope Pius II . As a result, it lies on the parallel streets of the Via Francigena and the Via Cassia . The church is located approximately 1 km south of the Porta Romana city gate between the Tressa and Bozzone rivers .
history
The church was built in the 13th century together with the Giuliano e Jacopo hospital and monastery that no longer exist as a branch of the hospital in Altopascio . Camaldolese women from Poggibonsi were housed there in 1257 to avoid the war between Siena and Florence . In 1258 the monks of San Giorgio a Lapi were added by order of January 28th by Pope Alexander IV . Since then the complex has been under the control of the Camaldolese. In 1896 the church was restored by the architect Vittorio Mariani. The campanile was redesigned by the architect Egisto Bellini in 1936, imitating the Gothic style .
building
The facade with rose window is made of bricks ( Laterizio ). There are three frescoes in the interior . Two of them come from Biagio di Goro Ghezzi , namely Madonna con Bambino e San Giovanni evangelista , also called Maestà , and San Cristoforo . Both frescoes are badly damaged and date from 1369. The third fresco ( Annunciazione ei Santi Sebastiano e Ansano ) dates from the second half of the 15th century and is attributed to Andrea di Niccolò (approx. 1440–1514). The two wooden statues on the side of the altar show the holy Sant'Ansano and San Vittore. They have been repainted several times and come from an artist close to Giacomo Cozzarelli .
