Porta Tufi
The Porta Tufi is a city gate in Siena and part of the city walls of Siena .
location
The city gate Porta Tufi is located at the southern end of Siena at the end of Via Pier Andrea Mattioli (named after Pietro Andrea Mattioli ). The street that continues after the city gate is called Strada dei Tufi and leads to the Tressa River . The city gate is located in the third third of the city Terzo di Città in the Contrada Tartucca (turtle) and is located in the city wall between the Porta Romana (the no longer existing gate Porta Giustizia , also Porta Justizia , before that Porta in Val di Montone not counted) and the Porta San Marco .
construction
As a secondary city gate, the Porta Tufi is not a chamber gate , but, in contrast to the Porta Romana and Porta Pispini , is only constructed as a simple arched gate without front gates. Architecturally, it consists of arched friezes and, unlike other city gates, does not contain any frescoes or other decorations.
history
The city gate was built in 1325 or 1326 by Agnolo di Ventura as the lead architect. In the vicinity there was probably an archway of the same name as early as 1247, which is mentioned in the constitution of the same year. Today's gate was built as part of the expansion of the city walls in Terzo San Martino and thus belongs to the so-called fifth city wall of Siena. It replaced the Porta all'Arco gate higher up . In the construction of the city walls, the city gate was built first, the associated city walls were only completed later. The section between Porta Romana and Porta Tufi was built in 1346, the section from Porta San Marco to Porta Tufi was not fully completed until 1415. Around 1355 the Compagna militare of Porta all'Arco and that of Sant'Agata were responsible for the defense of the gate. The Porta Tufi gained political importance when Enea Piccolomini and Giovanni Benedetti entered through the gate in July 1552 to help the city of Siena in driving out the Spaniards. The city gate was restored from 1932 to 1935.
