The Tressa is a 17 km long river in Italy in the Tuscany region . It runs through the province of Siena from Siena in a south-easterly direction.
course
It rises west of Siena near Marciano, where it joins the Pescaja (today Pescaia), and flows south along the Strada Statale 223 di Paganico . After a few kilometers it turns in a south-westerly direction, flows south along the Via Cassia (state road SS 2, here coincides with the Via Francigena ) and passes the Senese district of Isola d'Arbia south at 176 m slm . Shortly afterwards, after a total of 13 km, it leaves the municipality of Siena and joins that of Monteroni d'Arbia . It traverses this for a total of 4 km and meets the district of Ponte a Tressa ( 172 m slm ), where it crosses under the Siena – Grosseto railway line and the Via Cassia or Via Francigena. A few meters later it enters the Arbia as a right tributary . Here he also briefly touches the municipality of Asciano .
history
According to legend, the children of Remus , Senio and Aschio, fled Rome from their uncle Romulus. They reached the banks of the Tressa to build the Castel Senio (today Castelvecchio) on the hill . Here they lit a fire that developed black and white smoke and thus became the city arms of Siena (Balzana).
The church of Santa Maria a Tressa in Ponte a Tressa is named for the master of Tressa (Italian Maestro di Tressa ), where his work Madonna col Bambino gave rise to the emergency name .
The Tressa in Literature
The river plays a major role in Federigo Tozzi's 1921 work The Homestead (Il Podere) , where the homestead is located south of Siena on the Tressa.
