Favorita (grape variety)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Favorita is an autochthonous white wine variety from the Italian region of Piedmont . It is cultivated in small stocks of around 40 hectares in the Roero and Langhe areas in the provinces of Alessandria , Asti and Cuneo . According to Norberto Marzotto, there were even larger plantings in the municipality of Corneliano d'Alba . Favorita is also often sold as a table grape on the markets of Turin and Genoa . The wine produced is used in blends with other types.

DNA tests in Turin showed that the grape variety is identical to Vermentino and Pigato .

Synonyms

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is very hairy, whitish and has a carmine tinge. The light green young leaves are slightly woolly hairy.
  • The medium-sized leaves (see also the article leaf shape ) are five-lobed and deeply indented. The stem bay is closed in a lyren-shaped manner when the ends overlap. The sheet is serrated to a point. The teeth are narrow and small compared to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is hardly blistered.
  • The cylindrical to cone-shaped grape is medium-sized and moderately dense. The round berries are large and yellow in color, which varies from amber. The peel of the crisp berry is thick.

Favorita ripens about 30 days after the Gutedel and is one of the late-ripening grape varieties. The variety can be harvested from mid-September to early October near Turin.
