Pigato

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pigato is a white wine from the Italian region of Liguria , where it has been known since the 16th or 17th centuries. Presumably it originated in Greece and was introduced via the ports of Noli , Genoa or Savona . The name is derived from the dialect expression Piga or Pigau for the stained berry peels. It was first described by Bollettino in 1883.

The variety is cultivated almost exclusively in the Ligurian provinces of Savona and Imperia and the metropolitan city of Genoa . Strong and extremely tasty white wines are made from Pigato grapes, especially around the village of Albenga . Sometimes the variety is blended with the Vermentino and / or Bosco grape varieties.

The Pigato vine is a mutation of the Vermentino grape variety , also called Malvasia . However, their wines are a little more aromatic and more aging.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. She is hairy white wool. The shoot tip is whitish in color with a crimson tinge. The young leaves are lightly hairy and light green in color.
  • The medium-sized leaves are five-lobed (rarely seven-lobed) and deeply indented. The stem bay is lyren-shaped open. The sheet is serrated to a point. The teeth are set very closely compared to other varieties.
  • The cone-shaped grape is medium-sized, lightly shouldered and loose berries. The elliptical berries are medium-sized and golden yellow in color. The taste of the berries is pleasant.

The moderately vigorous grape variety ripens around 30 to 35 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen late. The yields are usually high, so that targeted vine training has to reduce the yield in order to achieve good wine quality.
