Beland Honderich
Beland Honderich OC (born November 25, 1918 in Kitchener , Ontario , † November 8, 2005 in Vancouver ) was a Canadian newspaper publisher ( The Toronto Star ).
Life
He worked for the Toronto Star during World War II . He started there in 1943 as a reporter , then became finance editor, and later in 1955 editor-in-chief . In 1966 he was promoted to president and publisher of the Toronto Star . Later, in 1969, he was chairman and editor , as well as chairman of the parent company Torstar .
With the Toronto Star, Honderich created the largest independent Canadian daily newspaper.
His brother is the Canadian-British philosopher Ted Honderich .
Awards
- 1976: award honorary LL.D. from York University .
- 1977: award honorary LL.D. from Wilfrid Laurier University .
- 1986: Awarded Officer of the Order of Canada .
- 1989: Awarded as honorary D.Litt. from Carleton University .
