history
The place name refers to Bulgarians who were stationed in the place as support for the Lombards . Until then, the place was known as Sala del Duca Allone . The place is first mentioned in writing as Bulgari Castrum on November 20, 1075 in a document from Pope Gregory VII to the Bishop of Populonia . In the 13th century, the Della Gherardesca family took control of the place. In the Middle Ages, the place was repeatedly victim of the wars for supremacy in Italy, so it was occupied and destroyed by troops from Florence in 1393 and by Maximilian I in 1496 . Thereafter, the population remained at around 100 until the middle of the 18th century. Measures such as drainage and amelioration made the place attractive again in the 19th century, so that by 1835 the population had increased sixfold (635 inhabitants). These included the family of the poet Giosuè Carducci , who lived here with him from 1838. The place experienced another renaissance in the 1970s, when the place was recognized as a wine-growing region by the magazine Decanter .
