The Kindergarten Daddy (Original title: Daddy Day Care ) is a 2003 comedy film directed by Steve Carr with Eddie Murphy in the lead role. In 2007 a sequel was published under the title Der Kindergarten Daddy 2: Das Feriencamp .

action

Charlie Hinton is a busy employee in the marketing department of a food company. His wife Kim has just resumed her profession as a lawyer because of their son Ben. A day-care center is therefore urgently needed for the son. Since there are no alternatives in their residential area, they are forced to enroll Ben in Mrs. Hersher's strict and elite kindergarten Chapman Academy (in the original language: Mrs. Harridan), which is also very expensive.

Charlie's attempt to introduce vegetable-based breakfast cereals as a new kid's product is a failure, the unhealthy chocolate-based products sell all the better, and the entire health-conscious product division is closed down. Charlie and his previous work colleague Phil are suddenly unemployed.

When Charlie still hasn't found a new job after several weeks, money becomes tight. The need makes Charlie inventive: he wants to take advantage of the gap in the market for childcare in the area and persuades Phil to open a daycare center in her house. They call this Daddy Day Care .

After a difficult start, the kindergarten is going quite well, which Mrs. Hersher, the director of the elite kindergarten, will soon find out. Hersher tries repeatedly to drive the kindergarten into ruin and puts the head of the supervisory authority on their necks. After 11 children attend kindergarten and, according to the regulations, there must be at least one supervisor for every five children, Charlie and Phil bring their old work colleague Marvin, a Star Trek fan, to join them.

Unexpectedly, Charlie and Phil are offered new jobs by their former employer and temporarily accept this offer, but quit immediately when they realize that their children are more important to them. Charlie, Phil and Marvin move into new, larger rooms and are even more successful than before. Since the parents are pulling their children away from the Chapman Academy , Mrs. Hersher has to close her business and is now on the street as a student pilot. Her former assistant Jenny, however, switched sides and now also works for Daddy Day Care .

Reviews

“The great days of Eddie Murphy are long gone. [...] If there is still something going on at the box office with the former top comedian, then it is with family-friendly mass entertainment for the younger visitors [...]. Steve Carr's completely harmless family comedy “The Kindergarten Daddy” follows this tradition. The once feared chatterbox Murphy has become hand-tame and plays his way through the logically predictable plot. At least a pleasant atmosphere is created for the younger audience, the older ones will be bored for a long time. "

- Carsten Baumgardt, film starts

"The solid family entertainment is neither innovative nor brave, but will nevertheless distract your family audience from their own chaos for an hour and a half."

- filmreporter.de

"The star vehicle for Eddie Murphy turns out to be a pleasantly discreet chaos comedy, whose clichéd plot is well entertaining thanks to the ensemble, which is well cast right down to the supporting roles."
