action

On the night of November 13, 1974, Ocean Avenue 112 (now renamed Ocean Avenue 108) in Amityville , Long Island : The DeFeos' eldest son, Ronald DeFeo Jr., shoots his parents in their bedroom, then goes into the children's room Zimmer and kills them too with a gun. Since he doesn't find little Jodie in bed at first, he goes to the closet where she is hiding and finally shoots her too.

A year later, in November 1975, George and Kathy Lutz bought the house at a very affordable price and shortly after moved in with their three children. But happiness does not last very long because mysterious incidents cloud the harmony of the family. Chelsea, the youngest of the family, speaks to the ghost of Jodie DeFeo, but nobody wants to believe her, and George gets frightening visions, changes increasingly and finally moves into the basement. In the dream, George breaks through a wall and finds a hidden torture cellar. Through terrible visions it becomes clear that a satanist missionary once lived in the house , who tortured and sacrificed Indians . Georges condition continues to deteriorate, until he in affective kill the family dog with an ax because he saw him as a demon. These delusions don't stop at his family either, until he finally attacks the children as well. Voices in his head keep telling him to catch and kill them. Things escalate when George tries to drown his wife and kill him with the propeller of his boat. But she can free herself and save herself from the water.

On the 28th day, however, George went partially insane and ran amok . He goes for Billy, the oldest member of the family, with his ax. In between, however, he has clear moments and asks to be killed himself because he can no longer control himself. But his wife Kathy manages to overpower George. They drag him to the boat and flee as quickly as possible with the entire family from the sphere of influence of the house. The next morning, George is back to normal and everything seems to be over. In the house, however, the ghosts and demons still seem to find no rest.

criticism

"The 'upbeat' variation of the horror film Amityville Horror (1979), motivated by a 'true incident', quickly turns out to be a failed remake that haphazardly cites haunted house clichés and lacks a structured tension build-up."

backgrounds

  • Shooting with a budget of about 19 million US dollars began on August 2, 2004 in Buffalo Grove , Antioch , Chicago and Fox Lake in Illinois , USA, among others . Additional locations were in Salem and Silver Lake in Wisconsin , USA. They were completed on October 12, 2004.
  • The film grossed just under 24 million US dollars again on the opening weekend in the USA from April 15 to 17, 2005. Overall, he achieved a box office income in the US of around 64 million US dollars.
  • This time the lead roles of George and Kathy Lutz were played by Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George , best known for their roles in Blade: Trinity (Reynolds), Smokin 'Aces (Reynolds) and Mulholland Drive (George). Melissa George also played a few supporting roles in Friends , Alias and Dark City . Ryan Reynolds also played roles in the X-Files , Outer Limits, and Scrubs , among others .
  • Directed by the relatively unknown commercial and documentary filmmaker Andrew Douglas , who delivered the documentaries The Source of Evil and Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus .
  • The music for the film comes from Steve Jablonsky , who composed soundtracks to Michael Bay's Die Insel , Bad Boys II , the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning , among others .
  • In the USA, the film only received an R rating from the MPAA because of its explicit depiction of cruel violence , which allows young people under the age of 17 to attend the screening only if accompanied by their parents or an adult. In order not to bring the film into the cinemas with an NC-17 , which would have meant a sure flop, the film was re-cut and submitted for evaluation again, and only then was the film given the rating R.
  • The characters really existed, the multiple murders took place, and the Lutzes lived in the house. However, the haunted portion of the story was supposedly invented by George Lutz and William Weber, Ronald DeFeo's attorney, partly to make money and partly to get DeFeo through a new trial. George Lutz died in May 2006 at the age of 59.

Awards

In 2005, Ryan Reynolds received the Teen Choice Award for Best Scary Scene.
