The Way We Were is a song written and composed in 1973 by Alan Bergman , Marilyn Bergman and Marvin Hamlisch . In the version sung by Barbra Streisand , it was used as the theme song for the film of the same name . The song won in 1974 the Oscar for Best Song . The song reached number 90 on the Billboard Hot 100 50th Anniversary Charts .

The song reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts as Barbra Streisand's first release and was released in various versions sung by Barbra Streisand.

The song has been covered many times, including Gladys Knight & the Pips , which reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.
