The Windmills of Your Mind is a pop song from 1968, the music of which was written by the French composer Michel Legrand and whose English text was written by the Americans Alan Bergman and Marilyn Bergman . The French text, entitled Les moulins de mon cœur , was written by Eddy Marnay .

The song with the English lyrics was used as the theme for the 1968 film Thomas Crown Unbelievable . The two melodic movements of the opening come from the 2nd movement of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Sinfonia concertante for violin and viola in E flat major , KV 364 from 1779.

In the original 1968 produced film, the song was sung by Noel Harrison , who brought the song to number eight in the UK singles charts . It won the 1968 Oscar for Best Original Song . A version of Sting was used in the 1999 remake The Thomas Crown Affair .

Dusty Springfield's version of the song from her 1969 album Dusty in Memphis reached number 31 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number three on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart in 1969 and is a number on the soundtrack for Breakfast on Pluto (2006).

Petula Clark's recording of the song can be heard in the film Killing Them Softly .

There are German-language versions of Udo Lindenberg as Unterm Säufermond , as Wie Mühlen rot'n im Wind by Vicky Leandros (1969), Katja Ebstein (1970) and Queen Bee (2004). The song was also interpreted in German by various artists in the GDR; a new version in the broadcast by Klaus Munro comes from Uschi Brüning on her LP "So wie ich" from 2015.

In the first episode of the second season of the Muppet Show , produced from May 23-25, 1977, it was also performed.
