Brian Hayles

Brian Leonard Hayles (* 7. March 1930 in Portsmouth , Hampshire , † the 30th October 1978 in Coventry ) was a British screenwriter and novelist writer . He was best known for his work for the film productions Das Dunkel der Nacht , Tauchfahrt des Schreckens , Der Mondschimmel and Im Banne des Kaliph

life and career

Brian Leonard Hayles was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England in 1930. Hayles spent some time in Canada as a sculptor and art educator before returning to the UK . There he continued his career as a schoolmaster in Birmingham for a while until he gave up this profession in 1963 and began working as a screenwriter for British television.

From 1963 to 1976, Hayles wrote numerous screenplays for episodes of well-known British television series such as Suspense (1963), Swizzlewick (1964), Z Cars (1964–1969), Legend of Death (1965), Coronation Street (1968), Doomwatch (1971–1972 ), Free Hand for Barlow (1974) or BBC2 Playhouse (1976). Between 1964 and 1974, 30 episodes were created for the successful Doctor Who mystery series alone

In 1973 Peter Sasdy hired him for his film The Darkness of the Night to rewrite the novel by John Blackburn into a script. Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing played the leading roles in the horror film . In 1978 he met the director Kevin Connor , for whom Hayles contributed the scripts for his two films Diving Trip of Terror and Under the Spell of the Caliph . In the same year, the English director Dorothea Brooking approached Hayles to write the script for the fantasy television miniseries Der Mondschimmel, which was lavishly produced by the BBC , starring prominently starring James Greene , Sarah Sutton , David Haig and Caroline Goodall .

In addition to his work as a screenwriter for television and cinema, he has also written numerous episodes for radio plays such as The Archers for British radio.

Brian Hayles died in Coventry on October 30, 1978 at the age of 48. His novel Goldhawk was published posthumously in 1979.
