You Don't Bring Me Flowers is a 1977 pop song directed by Neil Diamond . The text was written by Alan and Marilyn Bergman .

The song is about a pair of lovers who, after years of living together, discover that their lives are frozen in routine. Neil Diamond released the song in 1977 on his album I'm Glad You're Here With Me Tonight . A year later Barbra Streisand played the song for her album Songbird . Radio DJ Gary Guthrie from WAKY-Radio in Louisville mixed both versions together.

This virtual duet was very popular with the audience, and so Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond, who have been friends since school, decided to re-record the song together and release it as a single. This recording was a worldwide hit and came to the United States up to the top spot of the Billboard -charts. At the Grammy Awards in 1980 , Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond only appeared together for the general public and performed the song live to an audience of millions. They sang the song together again in 2004 at a fundraiser for the election campaign for Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry
