In some Romance languages, Alano stands for different dogs of molossoid type. The Great Dane is called Alano in Italian and is also known as Alano Alemán in Spanish . There is (as of January 2013) no dog breed recognized by the FCI that is called Alano, and the British KC and the American AKC do not have a breed with this name. In Spain there is a breed recognized by the local breed association called Alano Español .

In Germany, a breed Alano on the race lists the states of Bavaria , Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia out. A permit is required for keeping in these countries.
