The Alano Español is not from the FCI recognized dog breed from Spain . The breed is recognized by the Real Sociedad Canina de España (RSCE), which represents Spain in the FCI, and has the standard number 406 there. It can be exhibited at Spanish pedigree dog shows and obtain the championship title.

The Alano Español is a molossoid type of dog. The bitches weigh between 25 and 35 kg at a shoulder height of 56 to 60 cm, the males weigh between 60 and 63 cm at 30 to 40 kg.

The name Alano stands in Romance languages ​​for different dogs of molossoid type, for example the Great Dane is called Alano in Italian , and in Spanish it is also called Alano Alemán .

Delimitation to the Dogo Canario

The Dogo Canario (FCI Standard No. 346) is not identical to the Alano Español . The RSCE has both with their own breed standard under different numbers.
