List of domestic dogs

The Presa Canario ( German : Canary Mastiff, Spanish: Dogo Canario before January 1, 2019 ) is a Spanish dog breed recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) , which has been known in Spain since the end of the Middle Ages ( FCI Group 2 , Section 2.1, Standard No. 346 ). The Dogo Canario is the natural symbol of Gran Canaria .

Origin and history

On the Spanish mainland, a uniform type of dog emerged in the late Middle Ages, which was selected for the functions as a packer for defensive game (deer, bear, wild boar), as a war dog , as a driving dog for herds of cattle and as a guard and protection dog .

These Spanish mastiffs were brought along by the conquistadors as war dogs for the conquest of South America . However, many of these dogs stayed in the Canaries , where they were still bred. There they lost many of their typical tasks such as B. the bullfight, the work as a driver and packer of the herds and the hunt for defensive game, so that they were used almost exclusively as guard dogs.

In the Canaries, the Spanish mastiff was given the addition "Canario". The FCI provisionally recognized the breed on June 4, 2001 under the name "Dogo Canario" and on July 5, 2011 finally.

description

The Dogo Canario is a sturdy dog with a shoulder height for females 56–62 cm, males 60–66 cm and a weight of 40 to 65 kg. The short, rough, easy-care coat is brindle or fawn. There are also smaller white markings and plates. The currents range from black brindle to gray brindle to brown to fawn brindle, the mask is always dark. The massive skull clearly shows that it belongs to the Molossian group . His physique is very muscular and powerful.

The Dogo Canario's ears were traditionally cropped , which is now forbidden in Germany and many other countries; However, there are also a number of docked specimens there, as dogs have to be imported regularly to refresh the continental breeding lines in order to prevent inbreeding depression . The Dogo Canario has medium-sized, drooping ears when not cropped.

Essence

His character describes him as calm, balanced, straightforward and with strong nerves. He is considered a good guard, protection, sport or family dog .

function

Today the dog is primarily seen as a family, guard and protection dog. He has also established himself as a service dog .

Perro de Presa Canario

The American Kennel Club (AKC) has had a Perro de Presa Canario breed in its Foundation Stock Service since 1990 . The breed standard does not match that of the Dogo Canario.

In Spain, the Ministry of Agriculture recognized a breed called Presa Canario in 2001 . The standard published there is also not identical to the FCI standard for the Dogo Canario. There is no corresponding recognition for the Dogo Canario.

There are disputes over the name and the standard for the breed based on the fact that the breed now recognized as the Dogo Canario is also the Presa Canario.

The FCI Secretariat announced on December 6th, 2018 that the Dogo Canario breed will be renamed and then called Presa Canario with effect from January 1st 2019 at the request of the Spanish association Real Sociedad Canina de España (RSCE) .

The Perro de Presa Canario is subject to restrictions in two German federal states. → breed list

Differentiation from Alano Español

The Dogo Canario is not identical to the Alano Español (Standard No. 406). The Real Sociedad Canina de España (RSCE), which represents Spain in the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), has both in each with its own standard under different numbers.

Legal differentiation from the Alano breed

In § 10 of the Dog Act for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia , dogs of the Alano breed are largely equated with dangerous dogs. According to jurisprudence, however, an explicit distinction is made:

“Initially, when the law was enforced, it was assumed that the dogs of the Alano breed also included dogs of the Cane Corso and Dogo Canario breeds because of their common ancestry. However, the Cologne Administrative Court ruled with a final judgment of September 6, 2007 (Az. 20 K 5671/05) that dogs of the breeds Cane Corso and Dogo Canario are not dogs within the meaning of Section 10, Paragraph 1 of the LHundG NRW. Legal situation in Switzerland

The Dogo Canario / Presa Canario is on the breed list in the cantons of Friborg , Geneva , Schaffhausen and Thurgau . Keeping them requires a permit in these cantons and is prohibited in the canton of Geneva.

  6. The UPPCC presents similarities and differences between the races, for example, as follows: “Soon there [UPPCC was formed - insert for Wikipedia quote ] after, other American Presa Canario clubs were founded. Some were quick to affiliate themselves with the new Canary Island Dogo Club, it's officers and breeder members. It appears the intention of this new aligned grouping was to gain FCI breed recognition, this of course required a breed name change from Presa Canario to Dogo Canario. Apart from this non-historic new identity came a reconstruction of a shorter version of the historical Presa Canario. This new dog appears to be of a type more befitting the show ring than that of the rustic guardian known as the Perro de Presa Canario.
