societies
Alan McDonald made his debut on September 24, 1983 for the Queens Park Rangers in the Football League First Division 1983/84 and ended the season with the promoted by Terry Venables in fifth place in the table. The defender had previously played nine league games for English second division club Charlton Athletic in the 1982/83 season . In the Football League First Division 1985/86 McDonald earned a regular place on the defensive of the club from London. In addition to a thirteenth place in the championship, the team reached the final of the League Cup 1985/86 . The Rangers lost the final game around 90 minutes playing through McDonald against Oxford United 3-0. After several years in midfield of the First Division , coach Gerry Francis' team reached fifth place in the 1992/93 Premier League . The team around top scorer Les Ferdinand (second on the list of goalscorers with 20 goals) did not qualify for the European Cup. After two placements in the single-digit table area, the club rose in 1995/96 as penultimate from the Premier League in the now second-rate First Division. In the 1996/97 season, the 33-year-old Alan McDonald (39 games / 2 goals) played his last games for his long-term club and moved to Swindon Town after missing the promotion (QPR was ninth in the table) .
After another 33 second division games for his new club, Alan McDonald ended his playing career after the 1997/98 season .
Northern Ireland national team
Alan McDonald made his debut on October 16, 1985 for the Northern Irish national team in a 1-0 away win in Romania. Thanks to this success, Northern Ireland prevailed behind group leader England in qualifying for the 1986 World Cup and thus achieved participation in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. After being nominated for the Northern Irish World Cup squad , national coach Billy Bingham used the 22-year-old defender in all three group games (1-1 against Algeria, 1-2 against Spain and 3-0 against Brazil). Northern Ireland was eliminated from the tournament as third after the group stage.
Another participation in an international tournament was not successful in Northern Ireland in the following years. Alan McDonald played his 52nd and last international match on March 27, 1996 in a 2-0 home loss to Norway.
As a trainer
At the beginning of the 2007/08 season, Alan McDonald took over the Northern Irish first division club Glentoran FC . In the 2008/09 season he won the Northern Irish Championship with his team. On March 1, 2010, McDonald resigned as coach of the first division club.
On June 23, 2012, McDonald died at the age of 48 on a golf course near Lisburn .
