Chongorói (also Chongoroi ) is a small town and a district in Angola .

history

The city was founded in 1914 under Portuguese colonial rule . On September 1, 1972, Chongorói was raised to a small town ( Vila ) and has since been the seat of its own district.

Until independence in 1975, the district suffered little damage from the Portuguese Colonial War (1961-1975), which took place mainly in the northern and eastern parts of the country. During the Angolan Civil War (1975-2002), however, the area around Chongorói was repeatedly the scene of fighting and raids. UNITA units repeatedly attacked MONUA and WFP convoys and injured or killed employees and helpers of UN and NGOs. One of the most serious attacks took place in October 1997, killing five people in total. Two of those killed were employees of the German aid organization Stiftung Sankt Barbara Deutschland , including Tom Sauber, a German paramedic .

In the course of the state reconstruction programs after the end of the civil war in 2002, the district is now making some progress. Drinking water was supplied in 150 villages in the district, health care facilities and outpatient clinics were set up in the community headquarters, and the larger villages in the district received their own health posts and schools.

administration

Chongorói is the seat of a district of the same name ( Município ) in the province of Benguela . The district covers 6151 km². Its population was estimated at 82,000 in 2011, and in 2014 the estimate was 122,868. The 2014 census is now to provide secure data.

In the north Chongorói borders on the Cubal and Caimbambo counties , in the east and south on the Huíla Province , in the southwest on the Namibe Province and in the west on the Baía Farta County .

There are three communities (Comunas) in the district:

education

In 2013, 29,926 students were enrolled in Chongorói County, including 21,616 primary school students. 805 primary school teachers and 587 secondary school teachers taught at 103 schools in the district.

economy

The district is strongly characterized by agriculture. Grain cultivation and animal husbandry are to be mentioned. Until Angola's independence in 1975, the district was considered a breadbasket of the country. In addition to grain, the products also included sisal , cotton , sunflowers , tobacco , vegetables, fruit and tubers . Production fell sharply during the civil war and is now recovering.

In the course of the civil war since independence, the number of cattle in the district has fallen from 72,000 (1975) to 12,000 (2002). In order to revive the sector, the district administration has switched to distributing cattle to primarily those families in the district who have lost animals in the civil war. In 2012 150 cattle were given to 75 families in ten localities in the district. This is intended to further stimulate cattle breeding in the district.

Of the 200 or so assets in the district, only 10 have so far been fully operational again (as of November 2013).
