Adalbert Sebastian

Adalbert Sebastian (born December 22, 1919 in Graz ; † May 6, 2004 ) was an Austrian state politician ( SPÖ ) in Styria .

Sebastian was born the son of the Central Works Council Chairman and Vice Mayor of Donawitz. He attended elementary and secondary school and then worked as a hut boy at Alpine Donawitz. Sebastian was the first young person in Austria to be elected steward of confidence and studied mechanical engineering in evening courses. He left Leoben for political reasons and was illegally politically active between 1936 and 1938. As a result of his illegal political involvement, he was dismissed by the National Socialists, and in 1940 he was drafted into the Navy just before his Matura. Sebastian was captured in 1945 and returned from Soviet captivity in February 1946.

Sebastian worked again in the Donawitz hut after the Second World War and was a union member. Between 1948 and 1949 he worked as an employee in the regional party secretariat in Graz and in spring 1949 became district secretary of the SPÖ Leoben. In addition, Sebastian was elected as the youngest member of Parliament in Styria in 1949. Sebastian also became deputy state party secretary in 1956 and rose to state party secretary on May 1, 1958. On June 15, 1960, he moved to the state government and headed the department of hospitals, sanatoriums and nursing homes. From September 28, 1970 Sebastian was also Deputy Governor, where he continued his previous department. From 1977 he was also a consultant for the socialist communities in Styria. On July 4, 1980, Sebastian resigned from the state government, on April 4, 1981 he resigned from the position of SPÖ state party chairman, which he had held since 1970. Sebastian was honorary chairman of the SPÖ Styria until his death.
