The Peterer Saddle is 1745  m above sea level. A. high pass of the Packalpe on the border of Carinthia and Styria .

Location and landscape

The Peterer Sattel lies between the upper Lavant valley and the Köflach-Voitsberger basin in western Styria . It is the northeastern tip of the Carinthian state border.

To the west below the Sattelbach runs to the Rossbach , which flows into the Lavant . A nameless channel goes east to the uppermost Teigitsch , one of the great tributaries of the Mur . Both Lavant and Mur are tributaries of the Drava .

The valley lines to the pass are also the municipal boundaries, to the southwest is the Carinthian Reichenfels , to the north Obdach (which stretches a bit over the ridge here), to the southeast Hirschegg-Pack .

The Speikkogel rises to the north  ( 1993  m above sea level ), the summit to the south is the Peterer Riegel  ( 1967  m above sea level ). The Peterer Sattel is located at the point from which the northern branch of the Central Alps runs towards Semmering, but a southern branch towards Slovenia and Croatia. The exact ridge branching point is the lower secondary summit of the Speikkogel with the cross directly north of the saddle. It is one of the passes of the poorly profiled main ridge of the western Styrian Randgebirge or the eastern Lavanttal Alps , which is used to delimit its main groups: the Amering massif of the Packalpe extends northwards towards Aichfeld (Judenburg-Knittelfelder basin) in the upper Mur valley. The Hirschegger Alpe runs south towards the Koralpe . Not far to the northeast is the Hirschegger Sattel , from which one speaks more specifically of the Stubalpe . The Packalpe can be counted as a term including the Amering massif, or in the narrower sense only south of the Peterersattel (for example in the landscape structure of Styria ). Otherwise, one speaks here in general of Pack and Stubalpe ( Alpine Club division of the Eastern Alps ), more rarely also Kor and Packalpe ( mountain group structure according to Trimmel ), because the delimitations are seen quite differently, and Pack, Stub and Hirscheggeralpe also as a generic term which can occur to others.

Tours

Like the entire Carinthian-Styrian border area, the area is an easy hiking area. The north-south long-distance hiking trail  (Austrian long -distance hiking trail 05) and the Via Alpina (purple route) run over the Peterer Sattel from the Hirschegger Sattel into the Koralpe . Otherwise, star-shaped paths over the surrounding peaks, high trails and valley climbs are possible.

The mountain road that leads up from Reichenfels (in the Rossbach / Sattelbach valley, from the Hummerben on the slope) is only open to the local agricultural community.
