The Große Speikkogel ( 2140  m above sea level ) is the highest peak in the Koralpe . The summit is located in Carinthia around 400 meters west of the border with Styria , around 18 km west of Deutschlandsberg in Styria and around 10 km east of Wolfsberg . Its summit cross was erected in 1948, renovated in 1973 (concrete foundation) and renewed in June 2014. On its crossbar is the inscription “Stay true to your home!” On one side and “Carinthia free and undivided” on the other.

Refuge huts for the most frequently chosen ascent from the Weinebene are the Grillitschhütte ( 1710  m ) and the Koralpenhaus ( 1966  m ) about 1.3 km from the summit . In addition to this refuge, there is also a VHF radio and television transmitter (DVB-T) from Österreichischen Rundfunksender GmbH and a radar system around the summit .

history

It is believed that the Speikkogel summit as the highest point of the Koralm ridge was already of military importance in Roman times and was used as a lookout point. During preparatory work for the construction of the radar system, an inscription stone from Roman times was discovered in 1962 at the Burgstall near Steinschneider summit in the west of the Speikkogel summit , which is assigned to an altar of the Roman god Mars-Latobius or Jupiter . The stone is privately owned by a family in St. Margarethen near Wolfsberg .

The mountain paths ( mule tracks ) between Carinthia and Styria were much more important until the road crossings ( Soboth , Weinebene , Hebalm , Pack ) were expanded. This was also evident in the official measures that were taken to combat the disease, e.g. B. ab. 1712 against the plague . Then generally guarded road and locking up were (Verhackungen, on the borders barricades erected) that prevented the movement of people and goods to neighboring countries and should thus impede the spread of the disease. Next to two guard huts at the Weinebene there was a guard post south of the Moschkogel in the sheep hut on the Hühnerstütze, a very steep hillside path ("Wolfspergische Schofhüttn", today Grillitschhütte). This post was described as "one of the most important points" and was filled with six men.

On September 28, 1810, Emperor Franz I visited the summit. An approx. 2 m high memorial pyramid for this visit was erected on October 17, 1811 by the brothers of Emperor Johannes and Rainer . No remains of it are recognizable.

Speikkogel radar station

The construction of the radar system ( gold bonnet ) of the armed forces began in early 1976 and could only be completed in 1980 with the installation of the antenna. Trial operation began in 1985 after the collapse of the radome had damaged the antenna. The phased array antenna installed at that time was of the type RAT-31S , since the end of 2010 a more modern RAT-31DL has been installed, which has a rectangular area of 77 m² and can carry out 360 ° all-round search at six revolutions per minute. The range of the primary radar for the active detection of aircraft is 500 km, the detection of transponder signals with the secondary radar is up to 450 km. Due to damage to the radome by thunderstorms, the radar station was switched off from May 17, 2012, after which mobile RAT-31S devices (MRCS 403 systems) had to take over the tasks of this station, which was restarted in autumn 2013.
