The Austrian Broadcasting Services GmbH & Co KG ( ORS , English Austrian Broadcasting Services ) is a service company for analog and digital radio transmission, and is part of the state Austrian Broadcasting Corporation  (ORF). ORS, based in Vienna-Hietzing , on the Küniglberg , operates 1795 transmission systems at 430 locations for Austrian broadcasting and is also active as a broadcasting service provider for numerous private television and radio providers. In addition, ORS Services offers its infrastructure for cell phone operators and blue light services in the area of ​​co-location and acts as a service provider in the broadcast satellite area.

ORS emerged from ORF broadcasting technology , which was spun off into ORF's own subsidiary on January 1, 2005 . In July 2005, the ORF sold 40% of its subsidiary to the Medicur Holding, which belongs to the Lower Austrian Raiffeisen Group . Since 2014, the subsidiaries ORF-Enterprise and ORS have held a 25.1% stake in the Austrian start-up Flimmit .

DVB-T

On October 26, 2006, after several months of test operation, ORS started broadcasting digital terrestrial television ( DVB-T ) in the metropolitan areas of Austria.
DVB-T broadcasting in Austria ended on October 24, 2017. From then on, terrestrial television in Austria can only be received via DVB-T2.

DVB-T2

Since April 12, 2010, a trial operation for DVB-T2 has taken place in Vienna . The programs ORF eins HD , ORF 2 HD and Servus TV HD as well as the radio programs Ö1 , Ö3 and FM4 were broadcast on channel 65 (826 MHz) by the station Kahlenberg . Various transmission parameters were tested. Trial operation ran until March 31, 2013.

The official start of DVB-T2 under the brand name SimpliTV took place on April 15, 2013 throughout Austria and offers up to 40 programs via the antenna, depending on regional availability. To receive the entire package, a monthly fee of ten euros has to be paid in addition to the broadcast tax. The reception of Servus TV HD and ORF programs in HD as well as other Austrian programs in the Mux-B regions that have already been converted to DVB-T2 is free after registration. However, the transmission is encrypted, so a commercially available CI + module (in connection with a DVB-T2 device; DVB-T devices are not suitable with the exception of special head-end stations) or a set-top box from SimpliTV is necessary. The last switch from DVB-T to DVB-T2 took place on October 24, 2017 in Carinthia.

ORS currently operates the following multiplexes in DVB-T2:

  • Mux A (in all regions - all ORF programs in HD - ORF2 regionalized with three federal state programs + radio programs)
  • Mux B (simplitv package in metropolitan areas)
  • Mux C (Pfänder, Patscherkofel, Vienna)
  • Mux D (simplitv package in metropolitan areas)
  • Mux E (simplitv package in metropolitan areas)
  • Mux F (simplitv package in metropolitan areas)

DVB-S / S2

ORS currently operates uplinks for five transponders of the Astra satellites at 19.2 ° East:

DVB-H

From June 1, 2006 to May 31, 2007, the ORS had the approval for a pilot project and broadcast a multiplex in DVB-H format. Due to the positive success, the pilot broadcast continued until February 1, 2008.

In 2007, the ORS submitted an application to the RTR tender for the MUX D. However, since it participated without the required prerequisites - it did not have a program aggregator - the ORS was rejected. The ORS was also unsuccessful in its appeal.

On February 29, 2008, MEDIA BROADCAST GmbH was granted approval to operate the MUX D, on which only DVB-H is broadcast. From June 2008, the DVB-H network was set up in cooperation with ORS. In time for the Olympic Games in Beijing 2008 , broadcasting with DVB-H was started in all of the state capitals. By August 2008, eleven transmission locations had been implemented with the ORS. This included important metropolitan areas such as Baden or Steyr .

However, as in other countries, the DVB-H service was subsequently unable to win any viewers and is considered to have failed. Estimates assume a maximum of 10,000-15,000 customers. The entire DVB-H broadcast was therefore discontinued on December 31, 2010.

Digital radio (DAB +)

From 2000 to the end of 2008, the ORS digitally broadcast the following radio programs in Vienna and Innsbruck:

At the end of 2008, DAB's program broadcasting was ended.

On May 28, 2015, DAB + test operations began with 15 programs in the greater Vienna area. This DAB + test operation ended on April 3, 2018. Simultaneously with April 3, 2018, the first private DAB + bouquet started on Kanal 11C in Vienna.

On May 28, 2019, ORS started the nationwide DAB + Federal Mux (DAB + Austria) with 9 programs in Austria

The ORS also broadcasts foreign DAB packages on the Pfänder transmitter as a service provider for neighboring countries.
