Flimmit is a video-on-demand platform based in Vienna that was founded in 2007. Flimmit is primarily active in the DACH markets with a focus on Austria. Films and series with a focus on Austrian and European productions are offered. ORF has been involved in Flimmit since 2014 through its subsidiaries ORF-Enterprise and ORS comm.

history

Flimmit GmbH was founded in 2007 by the shareholders Karin Haager, Walter Huber and Ulrich Müller-Uri and is the first Austrian online video store with film and TV productions from Austria and Europe. The starting shot for the operational development of the platform was given in October 2008. The first 140 films were available for the first time on the web at flimmit.com in May 2009.

Thanks to numerous partners and sponsors, Flimmit has continued to grow over time. The first and decisive funding partner for Flimmit in 2008 was AWS (Austria Wirtschaftsservice GmbH) as part of the “impulse XL” tender. In this start-up funding call, Flimmit was funded again in 2010.

Flimmit is currently supported by the European funding program Creative Europe / MEDIA. Previously, Flimmit was also supported by the ÖFI (Austrian Film Institute), departure - the creative agency of the City of Vienna - in the Focus Cooperation program and by the BMVIT (Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology) in cooperation with the FFG (Research Promotion Agency) as part of the “ Austrian Electronic Network ”and the Vienna Business Agency.

ORF has been involved in Flimmit since 2014 through its subsidiaries ORF Enterprise and ORS comm.

On March 16, 2015, Flimmit presented its platform with a new range and a new design as part of a launch event at the Vienna Summer Stage. The brand identity has been revised. A heart stylized as a clapperboard serves as the new logo. In different representations, it symbolizes the variety of genres that are offered on the platform.

In contrast to other video-on-demand providers, who are increasingly trying to get American film content, Flimmit, as a funded platform, focuses on the digital distribution of audiovisual content from Europe.

In 2017, more than 7,000 mostly German-language titles were available on Flimmit. Flimmit is seen as a digital delicatessen store that focuses on Austrian productions and thus also offers filmmakers an additional sales and evaluation option.

Flimmit provided the technical infrastructure for the audiovisual streaming portal fidelio, a classical music platform of the ORF in cooperation with Unitel.

In June 2016, ORF took over 97 percent of the shares in Flimmit, with 1.106 percent each remaining with the founders Karin Haager, Walter Huber and Ulrich Müller-Uri.

In July 2017, the ORF published its proposal to convert Flimmit into a public-law on-demand service, which in future also provides for the use of GIS fees. According to ORF, this step is necessary because Flimmit has made a loss of around two million euros in three years and it is not possible to cover costs.

Content

Flimmit offers thousands of titles on its platform. In addition to the options of both lending (streaming) and buying (downloading) films and series, there is also a subscription model in which the majority of the titles are included. The subscription is available in three different versions: as a 1-month subscription, a 3-month subscription and a 12-month subscription.

The offer currently consists of Austrian productions, German-language blockbusters, TV events, TV series, documentaries, highlights from European film festivals, film classics, children's, youth and animation films, cult films as well as operas and theater productions. The portfolio is regularly supplemented with exclusive content such as “ Altes Geld ”, “ Vorstadtweiber ” or “ Landkrimis ”.

In May 2016 Flimmit started a new series of curators. Under the title “Recommend personalities”, people from public life present their favorite films under a self-selected focus. Actress Martina Ebm made the start .

reception

Flimmit can be used on the web, on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets and on the television. Separate apps are available for the mobile operating systems from Apple and Android, which can be downloaded from the respective download stores. There are separate apps on the television for smart TVs from Samsung, LG, Philips and Toshiba. Flimmit also supports the services of Google Chromecast and Apple AirPlay, as well as Amazon Fire TV and Apple TV.

Flimmit is the first video-on-demand provider to be received on its own satellite channel. The prerequisite for this is an Internet and HbbTV-compatible television set. Flimmit has also been integrated into the ORF's HbbTV portal since June 2016.

Flimmit also cooperates with cable network operators such as Salzburg AG (via CableLink-TV) and kabelplus. In CableLink TV, the Flimmit portal is anchored on channel 33 and for kabelplus customers on channel 30. The customers of the two cable network operators can access over 4,000 films and series free of charge.

EuroVod

Flimmit is part of the EuroVoD initiative founded in 2010. The European organization is an association of independent VoD providers and is keen to simplify and expand the cross-border distribution of national films.

The European online film festival STREAMS, which focuses on young independent and arthouse cinema, is organized on a regular basis with the partners of EuroVoD. The participating countries are sending two current films into the race that have not yet been released in the other European countries. The winning film will be chosen by a jury made up of bloggers and filmmakers from all participating nations and will receive prize money of 3,500 euros.
