Daniel MacMillan (born September 13, 1813 on the Isle of Arran , † June 26, 1857 in Cambridge ) was a British publisher.

Life

Daniel MacMillan was born on September 13, 1813 on the Isle of Arran, Scotland, to a small farmer. In 1833 he came to London to sell books for a Cambridge publisher. Eleven years later he decided to expand into the publishing business. Together with his brother Alexander Macmillan , he founded the prestigious Macmillan Publishers . Both sent George Edward Brett to New York to set up an American subsidiary for the publisher .

He died in Cambridge on June 26, 1857 and found his final resting place in Mill Road cemetery, Cambridge.

His grandson was the British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan .
