Macmillan Publishers (United States)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Macmillan Publishers , based in New York City, was the US subsidiary of British Macmillan Publishers, founded in 1869 and independent from 1896 . Today, this includes the publishing activities of the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group from New York, which has taken over both the British and US Macmillan publishers.

The branch was established in New York from 1869 by Macmillan's representative George Edward Brett. In 1896 his family took over the business, which became independent of the British Macmillan publishing house. The families were friends.

The US group Macmillan was acquired by Robert Maxwell and sold to Simon & Schuster in 1994 , who sold the name to the Pearson media group in 1998 . From these, Holtzbrinck acquired the name in 2001 and bundled its US activities under it.

The headquarters in New York is in the Flatiron Building .

Macmillan's publishing business, now bundled under Holtzbrinck, includes St. Martin's Press (founded in 1952 by British Macmillan Verlag for US business), Tor / Verge (science fiction, fantasy), Farrar, Straus and Giroux , Picador (founded in 1995, Paperback), Henry Holt , Macmillan Audio , Macmillan Children's Publishing Group .

The German publishers of the Holtzbrinck Group are also classified under Macmillan (Rowohlt, Kiepenheuer & Witsch, S. Fischer, Argon, Droemer-Knaur).
