Sankt Margarethen is located northwest of Wolfsberg. The former municipal area extended into the Weißenbachtal and along the Leidenberg.

history

The oldest written mention of the church village comes from the year 1289.

Viticulture played an important role in earlier centuries. From the 18th century onwards, however, it was gradually replaced by fruit growing, especially in the cadastral community of Unterleidenberg. The fruit was mainly used for making must and brandy.

For a short time, around 1560/70, mining was also carried out. A Bamberg raft oven in Raggl was only in operation for a few years (1641 to 1648) and was then moved to St. Gertraud . Some hammer mills , nail and coppersmiths along the Weißenbach had a longer existence .

The name of the Schmelzhofen Castle in St. Margarethen is not related to metal processing, as has long been assumed. It was named after a Schmelzing family from Judenburg who owned the property in the late 15th century.

As a political municipality, St. Margarethen existed from 1850 until it was incorporated into Wolfsberg in 1973. In 1930 it was raised to a market municipality . In 1962 the localities of Unter- and Oberleidenberg were ceded to Wolfsberg, in 1964 Forst was incorporated. In 1973, the market community went up in the course of a community reform in the city of Wolfsberg.

The SPÖ politician Josef Michael Weißegger (1923–2016) was the last mayor of the then market town from 1964 to 1972. In 2019, the Wolfsberg municipal council decided to rename the square in front of the St. Margarethen elementary school as Josef-Michael-Weißegger-Platz.

Facilities

At public facilities there is an elementary school with a modern sports hall, which serves as a training and competition facility for the BBC Wolfsberg, and the St. Margarethen volunteer fire brigade , which provides fire protection and general help. There is also the eponymous Roman Catholic parish church St. Margarethen in Lavanttal .

economy

Commercial facilities include a department store, an inn, a bakery and a thermal spa.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of St. Margarethen, which was awarded to the then market town on October 20, 1955, symbolizes the change in the local economy from the former mining industry to fruit growing with the blast furnace from which a spherical leafy tree grows. The green in the base of the shield symbolizes the fertile soil. In the shield background are the Carinthian state colors (reversed).

The official blazon of the coat of arms reads: “In a shield split in silver, red and gold and provided with a green shield foot, a square furnace made of brown ashlar rises from the foot end, of which both sides can be seen in addition to the front edge. A globular, leafy tree grows up on the furnace between two crossed black hammers. "
