The Bayerhofen castle rises on the right bank of the Lavant, just south of the formerly walled old town of Wolfsberg in Carinthia .

history

The first mention of the castle in a document from 1239 names a Chunrad der Payer as the first owner. His family owned the castle until 1539. At the time of the Reformation , the castle was a center of Martin Luther's teaching . The current shape of the castle dates from the 16th century. In 1807 it was bought by Franz Xaver Schnerich, the elder. Bayerhofen Castle was owned by the Schnerich family until summer 2019. In August 2019 the castle was acquired by the laying hen entrepreneur Franz Taschl from Sankt Paul im Lavanttal .

In mid-2006, the Secco painting on the front of the castle was painted over.

The castle now serves as a residential building. The arcade courtyard can be visited.

Building description

The castle is an irregular four-winged building with a large inner courtyard with two-storey, open arcades . The most noticeable component is the three-story residential storey on the west facade with three street-side gables and parallel hip roofs. This part of the complex probably contains the oldest, probably Gothic part of the castle.
