Gräbern-Prebl is located halfway between the two towns of Wolfsberg and Bad St. Leonhard, on the hills to the right (west) of the narrow valley of the Lavant ( Twimberger Graben ), to the Shoulderkogel  ( 1475  m above sea level ) and the Auenbach in the west. The southern part belongs to Wolfsberg, the northern part to Bad St. Leonhard, the municipal boundary runs along the Süßenbach .

The area comprises around 250 buildings with almost 850 inhabitants, around 3 ⁄ 4 of them in the Wolfsberg part. These include the two places Gräbern and Prebl (both Wolfsberg), Preblau ( Prebl-Brunnen , in Bad St. Leonhard), Gräbern-Twimberg an der Lavant (in both communities), and numerous individual layers.
The two localities Gräbern and Prebl each also have districts in Bad St. Leonhard and form the counting districts Gräbern-Prebl-Süd in Wolfsberg and Gräbern-Prebl-Nord in Bad St. Leonhard. In Wolfsberg, however, Wölling , on the other side of the Auenbach valley, is also included in the counting district .

The Gräbern Tunnel of the Süd Autobahn  (A2) runs beneath Gräbern .

The formerly independent municipality of Gräbern-Prebl was divided into the two large municipalities of the cities with the municipal reform in 1973 . Since the two former localities, Prebl in the west and Graves in the east, were also divided into a north and south half, there are now two localities for each of the two sub-towns.
