The Graebern Tunnel is a two-tube motorway tunnel on the A2 south motorway in Carinthia , Austria . The village is named after Gräbern , which is undercut by the tunnel. The length of the west tube is 2,148 m, that of the east tube 2,144 m.

The first tube was opened on July 26, 1986 during the opening of the A2 between Bad St. Leonhard and Wolfsberg . The motorway between Bad St. Leonhard and Wolfsberg Nord was only partially built, which is why the construction of the second tube was postponed until later.

After the devastating tunnel fire in the Tauern tunnel on May 29, 1999, it was decided quickly to expand all tunnels in Austria. The second tube of the Gräbern Tunnel was also there.

Construction began on July 16, 2001. The tunnel breakthrough took place on July 27, 2002. All other work (construction of the roadway , electrical equipment, etc.) could be completed on schedule by October 28, 2003.

This was followed by the general renovation of the eastern tube. By June 25, 2004, this work could also be completed on time. Since then, the Gräbern Tunnel has been accessible through two tubes.
