Frantschach-Sankt Gertraud

Located northeast of Wolfsberg , the municipality extends from the Lavant to the slopes of the Koralpe . The 16 localities of the municipality are between 504 and 1600 m above sea level. In the east the community borders on the Styrian district of Deutschlandsberg .

Community structure

The community of Frantschach – St. Gertraud is divided into the Kamperkogel, Trum- and Prössinggraben, Obergösel, Limberg, Untergösel, Kamp, Hintergumitsch, Zellach, Vorderwölch and Hinterwölch cadastral communities . history

From the 11th century onwards, the Upper Lavanttal was under the rule of the Bamberg Monastery , today's municipal area belonged partly to the Wolfsberg City Court and partly to the Hartneidstein Regional Court . The church in St. Gertraud was first mentioned in a document in 1289.

From the late Middle Ages , mining and iron processing were formative; There was a hammer mill in Frantschach, a hammer and a blast furnace in St. Gertraud and ore was mined in Wölch. In 1759 the businesses from the Bamberg monastery first came to the Austrian state, in 1825 they were bought by the Wolfsberger Eisenwerkgesellschaft and finally in 1846 by the Silesian entrepreneur Hugo Henckel von Donnersmarck . He had a modern blast furnace built in St. Gertraud in 1847/48, but also converted the Frantschach plant into a cellulose factory in 1882 in view of the looming crisis in the mining industry. This gave birth to today's company Mondi Packaging Frantschach .

When local communities were formed in 1850, the three communities Gösel, Kamp and Wölch were initially constituted, which between 1954 and 1963 became the community of Frantschach-St. Gertraud joined forces. When the municipality was reformed in 1973, the municipality was already incorporated into the larger municipality of Wolfsberg. After a referendum in 1991, she became independent again on January 1, 1997, and Frantschach-St. Gertraud Carinthia's youngest community. Wolfsberg wanted to prevent the spin-off of Frantschach to the last, because Frantschach is home to a large taxpayer with the paper and pulp mill.

Due to its economic importance, the municipality was given the right to use the designation “ market municipality ” in 2001 .

According to the 2001 census, Frantschach-Sankt Gertraud has 3,148 inhabitants, 92.5% of which are Austrian, 2.7% Bosnian and 1.8% Croatian. 89.3% of the population profess to the Roman Catholic Church , 1.1% to the Protestant Church and 3.7% are of the Islamic faith. 4.9% have no religious beliefs.

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: “In the raised shield base, silver and black open, three pointed arches on two post-wise growing, under the fighters strengthened services, above a silver, black drawn, in the basement sloped, in the upper floor somewhat recessed and above with a crenellated wreath roofed turrets at the corners reinforced tower, bordered in silver by a leaf at the front and a spruce branch at the back. "

In the base of the shield, the three Gothic yokes of the parish church of St. Gertraud are indicated as pointed arches, above them the blast furnace built in 1847/48. Leaves and spruce branches stand for the Frantschach paper and pulp production, which is still important today.

The coat of arms and flag were awarded to the community on June 3, 1999, the flag shows the colors green and white with an integrated coat of arms.

Culture and sights

Catholic parish church St. Gertraud in Lavanttal hl. Gertrud von Nivelles: The late Gothic church is from the first half of the 16th century. There is a Gothic fresco from around 1420 on the west wall. A previous building was first mentioned in a document in 1289, and St. Gertraud has been a parish since 1539.
Catholic parish church Kamp hl. Nikolaus: The church in its current form is also built in the late Gothic style (end of the 15th / beginning of the 16th century), it was mentioned in documents as early as 1346 (uncertain) and 1399.
The Frantschacher blast furnace is located on the Lavant north of St. Gertraud. The tower-like building, built in 1848 with Gothic ornamental shapes, is included as a landmark in the municipality's coat of arms.

The Buchhof agricultural college can also be found near Mondi Packaging Frantschach .

Economy and Infrastructure

The largest operation in the municipality is the paper and pulp mill of Mondi Packaging Frantschach . Tourism also plays a certain role, the Weinebene ski area is located near St. Gertraud , and Hebalm and Koralpe are not far .

The Packer Straße (B 70) and the Lavanttalbahn railway line run through the municipality .
