The Hartneidstein castle ruins are the ruins of a hilltop castle in the Carinthian Lavant Valley that was built around 1300 and has been in disrepair since the 18th century . It is located in the Wolfsberger district at 877 meters above sea level on a slope of the Koralpe above the village of Eitweg .

History of the castle

The castle was built around 1300 by Hartneid von Weißenegg. It remained in the possession of the Weißenegger until 1331, after which it came to the Lords of Walsee and after their extinction in 1363 to the Counts of Cilli . In 1425 the bishopric of Bamberg acquired the castles and regional courts Hartneidstein and Weißenegg from Hermann II von Cilli in exchange for the Hohenmauthen fort near Muta . Hartneidstein remained the seat of a regional court, which from then on was responsible for the lower Lavant valley. In 1469, Hartneidstein was attacked by the Turks and burned down, but was immediately rebuilt. When the seat of the court was moved to Wolfsberg at the end of the 17th century, the complex was already in disrepair, which was accelerated by the loss of importance in the 18th century.

From the originally 25 m high, square keep , walls have been preserved in the north, other parts of the current ruins, including the Gothic profiled gate and the gatekeeper house on the north side as well as the remains of the palace in the south of the complex go to later additions from the 14th and 15th centuries back.
