Reideben Castle is a renaissance castle on the western slope of the Hartelsberg, a foothill of the Koralpe , in the municipality of Wolfsberg .

history

In 1354 Niklas the Sax owned the farm at St. Urban, the church that is located next to today's castle. Around 1448 the property went to Leonhard von Presing (Prösing). At that time the building was named Reideben. At that time the building consisted only of today's south wing and half of the west wing, the rest of the courtyard was closed by a wall. In 1480 Reideben was largely destroyed in the Turkish Wars.

In 1580 David von Presing sold the property to Alexander von Freyberg, who probably gave the castle its current form. His son Helfried had to sell the castle in 1629 because of his Protestant faith. After several changes of ownership, Reideben came to the diocese of Bamberg in 1672 , to Otto Graf von Dernbach in 1686 and to the cathedral monastery of St. Andrä in 1693 . In 1808 Reideben went to the kk religious fund with the entire foundation . In 1819 Anton von Pettenkofen bought the property in an auction, in 1835 Josef Rainer von Harbach bought it. In 1846 Hugo Henckel von Donnersmarck bought the castle, which is still owned by the family today.

Building description

The castle consists of three two-story wings with an attic, which together with the east wall form a rectangular courtyard. At the four corners of the complex there are towers with different floor plans: the northwest tower is square, the southwest and southeast tower are octagonal, and the northeast tower is round.

The coats of arms of Alexander von Freyberg and Anna von Kronegg, held by lions, and the coats of arms of the families of the mothers Resch von Gerolzhausen and Häll von Suntheim on both sides of the arches are attached above the round arched square portal from 1591 on the south side. The Henckel-Auersperg double coat of arms above the east gate is held by two lions from around 1600, which come from Himmelau Castle .

The courtyard is equipped with arcades on the ground floor and twice as many arcade bays on the upper floor.

Numerous hewn stones belong to the castle; one overhang , four evangelists and a figurative corbel come from Waldenstein , the coat of arms stones from around 1580 by Häll-Hermann and Herberstein from Himmelau.

The so-called bishop's stone is set up in front of the east gate: a triangular plate, supported by a stone cylinder and three heraldic cartouches. On the plate are a stone three-headed head, the coat of arms of the Bamberg bishops Johann Georg I. Zobel von Giebelstadt , Martin von Eyb and the coat of arms of the Vice-Cathedral Johann-Friedrich Hoffmann Freiherr von Grienpichl. The stone used to stand in Wolfsberger Park, where a replica is now set up.
