Himmelau Castle is a former late Gothic moated castle west of the village of St. Michael im Lavanttal in the Wolfsberg community . Since 1902 the property has been a monastery of the Discalced Carmelites .

history

A tower at St. Michael, which was owned by the Weissenegger, was first mentioned in a document in 1289. The complex came to the Diocese of Lavant in 1331 and belonged to the Himmelbergers in the 15th century. The expansion to a castle took place in a document before 1491 and was probably started in 1476 under Heinrich von Himmelberg. The castle was further refurbished in the 16th century. From 1581 to 1628 the castle was owned by the Kronegg family, also Cronegg (noble family) , and had different owners thereafter. In 1988 the bulk floor was expanded.

The castle is a four-sided complex around a courtyard, the former moat was drained. The three round corner towers come from the Gothic, a fourth in the northwest was removed, as well as the high west wing. The south facade was redesigned in a neo-Gothic style. The arcade in the east wing dates from the 16th century. A square portal from the end of the 16th century and heraldic lions were transferred to Reideben Castle.

Castle chapel

The chapel, built around 1480/1490 on the ground floor of the southeast tower, is dedicated to St. John Nepomuk . The late Gothic central room has a six-part star rib vault with polygonal services and leaf capitals . The western shield wall facing the castle was only recently built and closes an original arch that probably connected the chapel with a nave . Access to the church today is from the east. Between 1953 and 1958, late Gothic wall paintings were uncovered in the arches. They show the fourteen helpers in need , two or three figures each grouped together in a framed picture field. Ten figures are completely preserved, two only fragmentary. In another arched area, Christ on the Mount of Olives and the donor family is depicted, below is the foundation inscription of Andreas von Himmelberg. The baroque crucifix above the altar comes from the church of St. Martin in Villach .
