RAT 31SL

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The RAT 31S is a radar family of the Italian Finmeccanica company SELEX Sistemi Integrati (now Leonardo SpA ). The abbreviation RAT stands for R adar A vvistamento T errestre, an Italian name for something like “down-to-earth reconnaissance radar”. Several different radar systems are built under this name, some of which are based on interchangeable assemblies and which cover several areas of activity.

The RAT 31 S is a fully coherent 3D early warning radar for both air defense and air traffic control purposes. It uses a phased array antenna , which generates several independently controlled pencil beams simultaneously with the flexibility required for air surveillance . The suffix SL stands for the now outdated designation of the frequency band S-Band (new: E-Band). The basic version uses linear horizontal polarization and achieves a range of more than 300 km with 135  kW pulse power from a transmitter output stage with a traveling wave tube .

The following letters in the name stand for

  • RAT 31SL for long range,
  • RAT 31S / C is a variant as a battlefield radar with a circular ( C = circular) polarization.
